Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the recent spike in insecurity across Nigeria to heightened political activities ahead of upcoming elections, expressing optimism that the situation will ease shortly after the polls.

Akpabio made this assertion on Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) Corporate Headquarters, an event attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the Senate President, the surge in insecurity is being driven by certain political actors unsettled by the performance of the current administration. He suggested that such individuals may be sponsoring unrest as a strategy to destabilize the system ahead of elections.

“Insecurity is increasing because elections are approaching. Some people, unsure of their political footing, are resorting to desperate measures. However, shortly after the elections, Nigerians will witness a significant decline,” Akpabio stated.

He also criticised the opposition, describing it as fragmented and lacking direction. In a veiled remark believed to reference Peter Obi, Akpabio questioned the consistency of political actors who, according to him, abandon their support base in pursuit of new platforms.

Urging citizens to remain patient, Akpabio maintained that the Tinubu administration is making steady progress and remains committed to national development.

He further commended Zacch Adedeji, head of the revenue agency, praising his leadership and noting that he has gained widespread acceptance despite the challenges typically associated with tax administration.

The event drew several high-profile attendees, including governors such as Babagana Zulum, Charles Soludo, Caleb Mutfwang, Hope Uzodimma, and Usman Ododo, alongside federal lawmakers and members of the Federal Executive Council.

The newly commissioned NRS headquarters, described as a modern, state-of-the-art complex, features three towers with 16 floors and has the capacity to accommodate approximately 3,000 staff.

The development follows the signing of the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act by President Tinubu in June 2025, officially transforming the Federal Inland Revenue Service into the Nigerian Revenue Service.
