Suspected fighters linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province launched a fresh overnight assault on Benisheikh, a key town along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway in Borno State, heightening security tensions in the region.

The attack occurred at about 11 p.m. on Tuesday in Benisheikh, the administrative headquarters of Kaga Local Government Area. Local sources reported that the insurgents moved in under the cover of darkness, sparking fear among residents and triggering an immediate security alert.

According to a credible source, the attackers were believed to be advancing toward the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai. The location remains significant following the deadly April 9 incident in which Brigadier-General O. O. Braimah and several soldiers lost their lives during a similar attack.

In response, Nigerian military air assets, including fighter jets and helicopters, were observed conducting aerial surveillance over Maiduguri, approximately 75 kilometres from Benisheikh. The heightened aerial activity points to an ongoing counter-operation aimed at repelling the insurgents and securing the area.

As of press time, authorities have yet to release an official statement, while residents remain on edge amid fears of further escalation. More details are expected as security agencies continue to assess the situation.
