Seyi Makinde has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, signaling an early move in the growing political realignments ahead of the next general polls.
Makinde made the declaration during a joint rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) held in Ibadan on Thursday.
The event attracted a large crowd of party supporters, political stakeholders, and allies, as both parties also formalised their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The Oyo governor, alongside APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, witnessed the signing ceremony, which party leaders described as a strategic alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
Among dignitaries present at the rally were Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal; Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin; former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and other political figures including Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, Chief Saka Balogun, Open Salawu, and Abass Adigun.
Speaking during the rally, former PDP National Vice Chairman, Eddy Olafeso, described the coalition as a fresh political movement aimed at restoring confidence in democratic governance and repositioning Nigeria for progress.
According to Olafeso, the alliance was beyond personal political ambition, noting that it reflected a collective resolve among progressive forces to build a better future for Nigerians.
He added that the country’s current political and economic challenges had made opposition collaboration increasingly necessary.
Political analysts believe Makinde’s declaration could significantly influence ongoing consultations within the PDP and allied opposition groups, with the Oyo governor now emerging as one of the early contenders in discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential race.
