President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reflected on the difficult journey that led to his emergence as Nigeria’s President, revealing that he endured intense political pressure and opposition during his campaign.

Tinubu made the remarks on Friday while receiving members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, during a Sallah homage at his Lagos residence as part of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The President expressed gratitude to governors, political allies, and supporters who stood firmly behind him throughout his presidential ambition despite the uncertainties and challenges that surrounded the race.

Recalling the obstacles he faced, Tinubu said he remained resolute in pursuing his goal of leading the country.

“Instead of dodging the bullet, I took it. I took a punch in the chin, a very hard one,” the President said while reflecting on the political battles he encountered during the campaign.

He praised those who remained loyal to him during the period, noting that their unwavering support played a crucial role in his eventual victory.

“We stuck together during the period I faced the challenge of trying to become the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.

Tinubu described the experience as demanding, acknowledging that many of his supporters also took significant political risks by standing with him.

“It was very challenging. It was tough for those who were with me. Some kept faith,” he added.

The President further disclosed that he kept many of his plans private while focusing on the campaign, relying on the trust and support of party members and allies who believed in his vision for the country.

“I decided to take the effort to campaign. I didn’t disclose to anybody what I would do. Many of you took the risk and went ahead with me because of the party platform and everything,” Tinubu said.

The visit by the governors formed part of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities, during which political leaders paid homage to the President and exchanged goodwill messages.
