2027 Elections: Group Seeks Probe Into Alleged Plot to Bring Foreign Fighters Into Benue

The National Intelligence Watch has called on security agencies to investigate allegations of a plot to recruit foreign fighters from Cameroon, Chad and Niger to destabilise Benue State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group warned that, if confirmed, the alleged plot could worsen insecurity, threaten residents’ lives and undermine the credibility of the forthcoming elections.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Chief Matthew Apine, the organisation expressed concern over claims that armed individuals from the three neighbouring countries could be recruited to instigate violence in the state.

The allegations have emerged amid ongoing political disagreements between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.

National Intelligence Watch urged security agencies to establish the facts, identify anyone suspected of involvement in plans to sponsor violence and ensure that those found culpable face prosecution in accordance with the law.

The group also raised concerns over allegations that criminal activities could be exploited to discredit the state government and influence the outcome of the 2027 governorship election.

It called on political leaders to resolve their differences through lawful democratic channels, warning that actions capable of escalating tensions could further threaten peace and security across the state.

The organisation further urged security agencies to strengthen surveillance and intelligence gathering in vulnerable communities, particularly areas already affected by insecurity and political tensions.

It appealed to residents to report credible information about potential threats to the appropriate authorities while cautioning against spreading unverified claims that could trigger panic or deepen political divisions.

The group stressed that security agencies must remain professional and impartial, warning against the alleged misuse of state institutions to intimidate political opponents or settle political disputes.

It also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant institutions to work closely with security agencies to ensure that the 2027 elections are conducted peacefully and transparently.

According to the organisation, protecting lives and property must take precedence over political ambitions. It added that any verified attempt to introduce foreign fighters into domestic political violence would require urgent intervention by the relevant authorities.

National Intelligence Watch urged all parties involved in the political dispute to exercise restraint and avoid statements or actions capable of heightening tensions.

The group maintained that protecting democratic institutions and ensuring that residents can participate in the electoral process without fear, intimidation or violence should remain a priority.

It emphasised that the allegations must be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action should be taken based on the findings of security agencies.
