A fresh crisis has engulfed the Benue State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following violent protests, allegations of political manipulation and reports of insecurity surrounding the party’s governorship primary process ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tension reportedly heightened across parts of Benue South after angry youths stormed the office of Samson Okwu, accusing him of allegedly collaborating with Tiv political interests to deny the Idoma bloc the party’s governorship ticket.
The protesters, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, warned against any attempt to sideline the Idoma nation in the party’s governorship arrangement, insisting that Benue South deserves a fair chance to produce the ADC candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The development has further fueled political tension within the party, with supporters expressing concern over what they described as an unfair and compromised primary process.
Amid the growing controversy, the National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark, has yet to publicly address the situation, a silence that has reportedly intensified suspicion and anxiety among party loyalists in the state.
The crisis took another dramatic twist in Okpokwu Local Government Area after reports surfaced that the local chairman of the ADC was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified persons.
Following the incident, armed police officers were reportedly deployed to the party secretariat in Okpoga to forestall a possible breakdown of law and order as fear spread among party members and residents.
Meanwhile, another party stakeholder, Ejembi Adaje, has demanded the outright cancellation of the ADC primary election in Enone, alleging widespread irregularities and claiming the exercise did not reflect the wishes of genuine party members.
