Lawyer Switches Career, Bags UK Nursing Degree After 14 Years at Bar
A Nigerian lawyer, Barrister Iorvihi Stanley Terna, has successfully transitioned from the legal profession to healthcare after earning a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Adult Nursing from the University of Cumbria, United Kingdom.
Terna, an indigene of Mbagba in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State, is also set to begin a new career as a Staff Nurse with the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
The development comes after 14 years of legal practice in Nigeria, where he built a reputation in litigation and legal advocacy.
Before relocating to the United Kingdom in July 2023, Terna founded the law firm, S. T. Iorvihi & Co. (Mnguashima Chambers), named in honour of his mother, Justice Felicia Mnguashima Ikyegh.
During his legal career, he served at the 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja and appeared before the High Court, Federal High Court, National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal.
He also served as the Diocesan Advocate of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi.
Speaking on his career change, Terna said the transition represented a move “from the courtroom to the bedside,” stressing that although his profession has changed, his commitment to serving humanity remains unchanged
.
His achievement has drawn praise from colleagues and members of the public, who described it as a testament to determination, resilience and the pursuit of new opportunities.
With his appointment to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), Terna begins a new chapter in a career dedicated to public service, this time in the healthcare sector.
