APC Councillors Threaten to Review Loyalty Over Alleged Harassment of Senator Yari
Councillors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have threatened to reconsider their loyalty and support for the party if the Federal Government fails to intervene in what they described as baseless allegations and political intimidation against Senator Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar, popularly known as Marafan Sokoto.
The warning was contained in a resolution adopted during the North-West Zonal Quarterly Meeting of the Nigeria Progressive Councillors Forum (NPCF) held in Kano under the leadership of its National President, Hon. Muslihu Yusuf Ali.
Speaking on behalf of the Forum, which claims to represent 10,378 APC councillors across the country, the group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct federal anti-corruption and security agencies to halt what it described as politically motivated petitions targeting Senator Yari.
The resolution, which was copied to President Tinubu, the Chairmen of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the APC National Chairman, strongly condemned what it called a coordinated smear campaign against the former Zamfara State governor.
According to the Forum, attempts to link Senator Yari to the June 11, 2026 seizure of ₦4.4 billion worth of raw gold at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport were false and misleading. The councillors noted that the EFCC had publicly identified the suspects involved and that none of them had any connection with the senator.
The NPCF also dismissed allegations that Yari was sponsoring anti-government protests or funding the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing such claims as unfounded.
The Forum praised Yari’s record in public office, citing his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State and former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. It highlighted projects executed during his administration, including the state’s amnesty and dialogue programme, road infrastructure, tertiary institutions, the establishment of the state-owned university in Gusau, and efforts to attract foreign investment.
The councillors further accused some political actors in the North-West of using their positions to target the senator after allegedly failing to secure governorship tickets. They warned that such actions could undermine party unity and President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
While reaffirming their support for the Tinubu administration, the councillors insisted that continued attacks on Senator Yari could force them to reassess their commitment to the party.
“We will not allow a foundational stakeholder of the Renewed Hope project to be victimized through intimidation, blackmail and false allegations,” the Forum stated.
