Benue IDPs Seek Jobs, Urge Public Support for Survival
Hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) taking shelter around the Makurdi International Market area in Benue State are appealing to members of the public for assistance as they continue to struggle with harsh living conditions and limited means of survival.
Residents and humanitarian observers say many of the displaced persons gather daily at the entrance of the camp from early morning, hoping to find casual jobs that will enable them earn money to feed themselves and their families. With limited opportunities available, many are said to spend hours waiting for anyone in need of farm workers, labourers, or other forms of manual assistance.
The displaced persons, many of whom were forced to flee their communities due to insecurity, are facing growing economic hardship. Apart from the challenge of securing food, they also struggle to meet other basic needs, including clothing, healthcare, and education for their children.
Members of the public have been encouraged to support the IDPs by offering farm work, commonly known as “jodo,” or any other legitimate employment opportunities. Such jobs can provide much-needed income and help restore dignity to those affected by displacement.
Well-meaning individuals, religious organizations, non-governmental groups, and philanthropists have also been urged to donate food items, clothing, and financial assistance to ease the suffering of the displaced families.
Stakeholders say collective support from society can make a significant difference in improving the lives of the IDPs and helping them cope with the challenges of displacement while they await lasting solutions to their situation.
