Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife have reportedly been abducted by suspected bandits in Katsina State.
According to reports, the incident occurred while the retired army officer and his wife were travelling to attend a wedding ceremony in Matazu Local Government Area of the state. The attackers allegedly intercepted their vehicle along the route and carried out the abduction.
Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the couple’s driver managed to escape despite sustaining gunshot injuries during the attack. He was reportedly rushed for medical treatment, while the kidnappers whisked the retired general and his wife away into a nearby forest.
A video circulating on social media shows the couple’s abandoned vehicle riddled with bullet holes, highlighting the violence that accompanied the attack.
Security agencies have reportedly launched a search-and-rescue operation aimed at securing the safe release of the victims and apprehending those responsible for the abduction.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the persistent security challenges facing several parts of northern Nigeria, particularly in Katsina State, where cases of kidnapping and bandit attacks have continued despite ongoing security operations.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while efforts to rescue the retired military officer and his wife remain ongoing.
