A group of women from the Agan community in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, took to the streets on Thursday to protest the persistent insecurity and rising violence in their area.
The women, who assembled near the Agan toll gate, marched along the highway, waving tree branches and chanting solidarity songs to express their frustration and call for urgent government intervention.
The peaceful demonstration disrupted traffic for several hours, drawing the attention of passersby and motorists.
A resident of the area, identified as Torkwase, confirmed the development in a telephone interview.
“The protest is currently ongoing at Agan ward, close to the toll gate. It is just about the insecurity going on around the area. We are tired and need the government to act fast,” she said.
Security operatives have reportedly arrived at the protest scene to ensure the situation remains calm and to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order.
This protest comes in the wake of a series of violent attacks and killings that have affected Agan and other parts of Benue State in recent months.
Communities in the area have repeatedly raised concerns over the increasing rate of insecurity, which has left many residents living in fear.
The women say their demonstration is a desperate cry for help, as they urge the state and federal governments to prioritize security in the region and protect lives and property.
