Obi, Kwankwaso Dump ADC, NNPP to Join NDC Ahead of 2027 Race
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) counterpart, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The two political heavyweights made the move on Sunday in Abuja, shortly after Obi announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Their defection is widely seen as a strategic step to reposition themselves for the 2027 presidential contest.
Obi and Kwankwaso were received at the NDC national headquarters by the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside the National Chairman, Moses Cleopas.
Welcoming the duo, NDC leaders described their entry into the party as a strong signal of growing national confidence in the party’s platform.
Earlier, Obi had confirmed his exit from the ADC, citing deepening internal crises and an increasingly hostile political environment. He noted that even within alliances, individuals often face unexpected opposition and criticism.
The former Anambra State governor clarified that his decision was not driven by personal disagreements with key political figures, including David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
According to him, persistent internal disputes and legal battles within the party influenced his decision to leave, drawing parallels with challenges he previously encountered in the Labour Party.
Obi reiterated his belief in leadership as service, stressing that he has never used power to oppress others, while dismissing claims that his political moves are driven by personal ambition.
